In February 2017, the Crowdfunding Academy launched a dedicated cohort in Kyiv, Ukraine, specifically engineered to support small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) and social startups displaced or heavily affected by early conflict in the Donbas and Crimea regions.

Initiated by UNDP Ukraine and backed by financial funding from the British Embassy in Kyiv, this localized chapter transformed how affected communities approached economic recovery. Rather than relying on traditional credit lines or institutional grants, participants were trained to leverage community-backed capital to restart their livelihoods.

Program Structure & Localization

To bridge international fundraising standards with local economic realities, the program paired the global curriculum of Brodoto with the field experience of Ukraine’s premier domestic crowdfunding platform, Big Idea / Spilnokosht. Over the course of three months, 50 selected teams underwent intensive, mentor-led workshops covering the critical pillars of campaign architecture:

  • Strategic Storytelling: Crafting transparent, high-impact narratives that conveyed business viability and personal resilience without relying on charity-driven messaging.
  • Financial Modeling: Structuring campaign goals that accounted for platform fees, production overhead, fulfillment logistics, and regional transaction costs.
  • Reward Optimization: Designing balanced, multi-tier reward structures that incentivized both community donors and early-stage product adopters.
  • Launch Marketing: Mapping communication timelines, pitch videos, and audience engagement strategies to secure critical momentum within the first 48 hours of a campaign.

Systemic Impact

The 2017 Kyiv chapter served as a vital proof-of-concept for regional alternative finance. By equipping displaced entrepreneurs with self-sustaining fundraising skills, the program built long-term economic resilience, allowing local ventures to successfully validate their products, engage new target markets, and independently secure capital in a volatile market environment.
